Smart Website Redesign

In a 2011 survey including 100′s of small to medium sized companies, 31% of them reported investing significant time and money for a website redesign only because “the site was old and needed to be modernized’.  Many of these folks didn’t have specific goals for the redesign of their website, except to make it look more modern — arguably a very subjective goal.

What is the purpose of your website?

Websites for small businesses typically have one of three purposes:

  1. To build the business’ brand through an engaging experience (by the way, this should NOT be the purpose of the website for a small company.  If you’re small, you need to be driving business with your website.)
  2. Generating leads to sell to later
  3. Selling products through an e-commerce shopping cart
If you don’t have a clear purpose defined for your website, now is the time to define one!

What is the goal of your redesign?

A redesign project should be focused on improving specific metrics of your website’s performance, and should align with your website’s purpose.  Embarking on a website redesign only for the purpose of modernizing is probably not justified.  (If your site is so old that it is a turn-off to your visitors, therefore hindering your most important goal — lead generation, for instance — then modernization is probably worth the money but your goal is really to increase lead generation!)

Website redesign can be effective in improving any of the following important metrics:

  • Visitors
  • Leads
  • Sales
  • Conversion %

Our website redesign process

Whenever possible, we like to measure a website’s effectiveness BEFORE we redesign the site.  We also work with our clients to get clarity regarding the website’s purpose and the goals of the redesign project.
These are the steps we follow before beginning our redesign work:
  1. Determine, with you, the purpose of the website (lead generation, direct sales, branding, other?)
  2. Set a goal for the redesign (improve exposure-i.e. visitors, improve lead generation, improve sales, etc.)
  3. Capture existing site metrics (visitors, leads, sales, effectiveness — conversion %, etc.)
  4. Audit the website assets to protect them.  Are certain pages ranking / converting / attracting visitors really well, now?  We must not lose them in the redesign.
  5. Redesign with multiple reviews/modifications as needed
  6. Gather and compare metrics, over time, with new site
  7. Suggest continual improvements
